Inventions:
In 1933 the FM, or frequency modulation, radio was invented by Edwin Howard Armstrong.
During this time period, the ballpoint pen was also invented.
The first helicopter that took flight and was successful in its mission was invented in 1939 by Igor Sikorsky
Silly putty was also invented by James Wright
Nylon was invented in 1935.
People:
The president of the United States at this time was FDR.
Audry Hepburn, one of the greatest actresses in the world in my opinion, was a child during WW2
Eleanor Roosevelt, the wife of FDR, was the first lady at this time.
Andrew Mellon was the secretary of state during the depression and expected the recession to be self limiting, because earlier recessions had been self limiting.
Heritage:
My Grandfather on my mother's side was a navy SEAL during WW2.
My Grandfather on my father's side was in the air force during WW2
Good start...you are missing some required work.
Assignment Number One: irony: the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning metaphor: a figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance stereotype: a simplified and standardized conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group allusion: a passing or casual reference; an incidental mention of something, either directly or by implication personification: the attribution of a personal nature or character to inanimate objects symbolism: the practice of representing things by symbols, or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character
One example of a stereotype in this book is that Adolf Hitler posts the Jews as rat-faced people, who are going to take over Germany, which has already been done by Hitler himself. Another example is that of Liesel to the Mayor's wife. Just because her son died in the war, she assumes that she is old and bitter.
One example of irony is when Rudy and Liesel call eachother dirty names, when they don't really mean it. A second example is when Liesel's home becomes open to a Jew, because it seems to me that she wanted to be different, and now she is, but she just can't tell anyone. Good start.
Assignment Number Two:
Internal Conflict: a conflict that takes place in place inside of the character and his or her mind.
External Conflict: a conflict that happens between one character and another or something outside of the character's head.
In Leisel, there is an internal conflict going on inside her about stealing the books. There is also a conflict about hiding Max in her basement, since she knows that it is against the law. A third internal conflict is her not being able to get a hold of her mother through her letters. She is very upset and thinks that it is because her mother doesn't love her anymore.
There are also some external conflicts going on. Between Leisel and Rudy, there seems to be some tension, about Rudy wanting to kiss her. Also between Leisel and Rosa Hubermann, because Rosa is always yelling at her and swearing at her. A third conflict is that of Leisel and the mayor's wife. Leisel is very upset, and angry, because she is always feeling sorry for herself, all the time.
Again, good start. However, you did not follow the directions.
Assignment Number Three:
Children were formed to be miniature nazis through school and through propaganda techniques. In school, problems were taught that indicated that Jews were outsiders, and should not be tolerated. For example, one problem would be something like "The Jews are aliens in Germany--in 1933 there were 66,060,000 inhabitants in the German Reich, of whom 499,682 were Jews. What is the per cent of aliens?" Also, many of the teachers in the schools were part of a union that promised to form the young children of the day into the nazis of tomorrow. Hitler was very serious about this, because he wanted to make sure that future generations followed in his footsteps, and never questioned his authority.
Good answer!
